WHAT is Rally?
Rally is a sport derived from Obedience. You and your dog are a team. You will learn to navigate a course of signs asking for specific skill sets to perform. These involve heeling, sits, downs, turns, and stays. As you progress, the foundation you build in the beginning will expand to incorporate many fun and challenging skills.
Competitive Rally is taught here. Whether you decide to compete or not, just coming out and having fun with your dog is our main goal. One of our longest holdouts took two years before deciding to enter the competition ring. Now, that team is hooked and working toward their Master level.
WHO can do it?
Rally is a sport meant for any age. It doesn’t require a lot of athleticism. If you can walk, you can do this. Age is not a factor, nor do physical challenges preclude you from this activity. One competitor we’ve seen does this with a walker. Another is legally blind. We now have a dog that’s deaf. There ARE no limitations if you are determined to give it a try.
WHY would I want to do this?
Many dog owners want to have an organized activity for their dogs. Sometimes, basic obedience is not enough. Some dogs need a job, or they create one at home that isn’t quite to our liking. Mental stimulation is the best way to tire out a dog. It’s the same for the human member of the team, too. Rally performance is 80% human, 20% dog.
The best part about Rally is that you are on the field with your dog, teaching him/her how to focus on you and your directions, and creating a special bond that comes with teamwork.
Socialization for both you and your dog is essential for your health and well-being. You will meet other teams with a mutual interest and make new friends. Most of all, this is an activity that both you and your dog can have fun doing. We stress FUN by teaching you to work through frustration, which will happen when you and your dog are learning something new.
WHEN should I start?
Any dog, any age can do this sport. Our youngest beginner was 4 months old. We also have dogs that are seniors experiencing Rally for the first time. If your dog is mobile, this sport is great for even the oldest dog. In fact, because this sport requires mostly walking, it’s great for a senior dog to keep those joints limber.
